Brinkley Coat of Arms
ARMS: Azure, a cross potent engrailed and in chief three estoiles or.
CREST: A cross potent engrailed surmounted of an estoille, all or.
MOTTO: Mutabimur - "We shall be changed"
NOTES: The date of origin of this arms and crest is not known. The
family was of England previous to 1766, and resided in Suffolk. The Irish
line of the family descends from the Rt. Rev. Bishop John Brinkley, born
at Woodbridge, Suffolk, in 1766, who married in 1792, Esther Weld, daughter
of Matthew Weld, of Dublin. The Rev. John was made Bishop of Cloyne. About
1850, the arms, crest, and motto were confirmed to Richard Graves Brinkley,
who was born in 1823. A confirmation of arms is granted only when proof is
submitted to the officials of the College of Heralds showing that, for a
century or more, the arms to be confirmed have been authentically used by
a family. A confirmation is, therefore, an official recognition of the
authenticity of an arms previously long used by a family.
